U.S. voting rights: Biden pushes for two legislations

U.S. President Joe Biden will use an upcoming address to forcefully advocate for Congress to approve two critical pieces of voting legislation

Biden will also discuss potential changes to the Senate filibuster… with the White House calling this a pivotal moment for the country.

Press Secretary Jen Psaki says the president is pushing “to ensure January 6 doesn’t mark the end of democracy but the beginning of a renaissance”.

The Senate filibuster requires that a bill get 60 votes to advance in the chamber and Biden will seek to underscore the stakes.

This all comes at a time when Republican-held states are advancing bills to make it harder for some groups to vote.

Psaki says Biden will “certainly be clear about what is at stake here and how important it is to protect people’s fundamental rights across the country”.
