Taiwan’s Vice President stopped over in the U.S. on his way through to Paraguay recently, eliciting a strong response from China.

A visit from one of Taiwan’s top politicians to the U.S. was always going to cause a stir in China as regional tensions remain at all time-highs over the island state.

And that’s what happened as Taiwan’s Vice President William Lai touched down in New York recently.

China has announced an increase in the number of military drills in the region in response to the trip.

Taiwan officials say this strategy is being used to intimidate voters on the island ahead of next year’s elections.
