U.S. offers Russia a deal in return for Brittney Griner

Woman’s NBA star Brittney Griner may soon be back on U.S. soil after Secretary of State Antony Blinken offered Russia a ‘substantial proposal’ for her release

Griner has been detained in Moscow on drug-related charges since February.

While Blinken did not go into details of what the proposal consists of, the possibility of a prisoner swap has been rumoured since the saga began.

He says both governments have communicated repeatedly and he is hoping to move toward a resolution soon.

One name mentioned a few times is Russian arms dealer Viktor Bout, known as the “Merchant of Death,” who is currently serving a 25-year sentence in the U.S.

Bout was convicted of conspiracy to kill American citizens and providing aid to a terrorist organisation.

Blinken says the detentions of both Griner and Whelan are ‘wrong’ and it’s a top priority to get them home.
