U.S. Justice Department adds assault charge in Trump assassination attempt

The U.S. Justice Department has added a charge of assault on a federal officer with a deadly weapon against Cole Allen, accused of attempting to assassinate President Donald Trump at the White House Correspondents’ Dinner.Allen allegedly fired at a U.S. Secret Service agent at a security checkpoint, contributing to a new four-count indictment from a federal grand jury.

New indictment details

The other counts include attempted assassination, firearm discharge during a violent crime, and illegal transportation of a firearm and ammunition across state lines.

Allen, 31, from California, was reportedly armed with a shotgun and a pistol on April 25 when he ran past security aiming to assassinate Trump and other officials.

He has not entered a plea regarding the charges.

Confusion arose about whether Allen actually shot the Secret Service agent while rushing toward the ballroom where Trump dined with approximately 2,500 attendees.

Initially, Trump officials suggested the agent sustained no serious injuries due to his ballistic vest, despite the lack of charges for such an act at that time.

Surveillance video released by U.S. Attorney Jeanine Pirro shows Allen firing at the agent, who returned fire.

Pirro stated that a pellet from Allen’s shotgun was recovered and found intertwined with agents’ vest fibers.

The indictment accuses Allen of employing a “deadly and dangerous weapon” to assault and intimidate the agent during official duties.

Allen fell and was subdued by law enforcement before reaching the ballroom, with no other injuries reported.
