As tensions continue in the Taiwan strait, U.S. and Canadian warships have been spotted sailing around the area

A U.S. Navy ship named the “Arleugh Burke-class guided-missile destroyer USS Higgins” has been spotted in the Taiwan Strait conducting a “routine transit.”

U.S. Navy spokesperson Lt. Mark Langford confirmed its team completed a transit “in cooperation with Royal Canadian Navy Halifax-class frigate HMCS Vancouver.”

“[The ships] transited through a corridor in the Strait that is beyond the territorial sea of any coastal State…

[The transit] “demonstrates the commitment of the United States and our allies and partners to a free and open Indo-Pacific.”

This comes after President Joe Biden’s 60 Minutes statement that went to air on Sunday reassuring that the Us would defend Taiwan if it was ever attacked by China.

This was the second time in three weeks that a U.S. Navy warship had made the voyage.

In recent years, warships from the U.S., United Kingdom and Canada have routinely sailed through this area.

Beijing states that Taiwan is an integral and staple part of Chinese territory.
