Metropolitan Police in the United Kingdom launch an investigation into Downing Street parties, held during coronavirus lockdowns

The Downing Street scandal is heating up even further, with the United Kingdom’s Metropolitan Police launching an investigation into alleged parties at the prime minister’s residence.

The Police Commissioner says authorities are looking into potential breaches of Covid-19 regulations.

“We’re investigating a number of events that took place at Downing Street and Whitehall in the last two years in relation to potential breaches of Covid-19 regulations”

Met Commissioner Dame Cressida Dick

The investigation follows the Cabinet Office inquiry team, led by public servant Sue Gray, passing information onto the police.

It’s unclear whether the investigation will delay the publication of Sue Gray’s report, which was expected to be handed down this week.

The Commissioner hasn’t confirmed which exact parties are being investigated, and infringement may not be issued to every person involved.

Boris Johnson addressed the House of Commons following the announcement by the Commissioner and says he welcomes the investigation.
