Trump made his remarks at the UN General Assembly, denouncing “globalist” schemes to regulate AI.He urged world leaders to embrace what he calls “super intelligence,” emphasizing the need for the US to maintain its lead over China in developing AI technologies.

Trump rejects regulation

Albanese participated in informal discussions with Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney before Trump’s speech, as well as meetings with South Korean President Joe Myung and British Prime Minister Andy Burnham.

The Prime Minister has been urged to focus on AI regulatory discussions with industry leaders due to safety concerns around the technology’s rapid development.

The Trump administration has indicated some discussions about AI safeguards may occur but opposes measures that could hinder U.S. advantages in technology.

Concerns were raised by the U.S. government regarding Australia’s proposed digital duty of care regime, which they believe could impact fair competition and market access for American firms and content creators.

U.S. officials expressed worries about asymmetrical power granted to the Australian Communications Minister concerning content management on social media platforms.

The U.S. statement mirrored concerns of the Coalition regarding potential new mandates that could lead to censorship and suppression of protected expression.

Member states, including Albania, Canada, and others, called for a framework on AI safety and regulation during the UN General Assembly.

Global AI framework

UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres endorsed the proposal for a global AI oversight body, calling for transparent protocols and clear standards across nations.

Guterres urged governments with significant AI capabilities to take responsibility for its implications on humanity.

Despite safety concerns voiced by AI industry leaders, Trump dismissed alarms about the technology’s risks, likening the warnings to previous climate change predictions.
