In Short:
– Trump and Putin had a 90-minute call discussing global issues, including Iran and Ukraine conflicts.
– Putin proposed a ceasefire in Ukraine for May 9 and methods for resolving the Iran conflict.
President Donald Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin had a 90-minute phone conversation on Wednesday, discussing various global issues, including the ongoing situations in Iran and Ukraine.
Kremlin aide Yuri Ushakov confirmed the call, noting Putin’s proposals for resolving the Iran conflict and a potential truce in Ukraine for the May 9 Victory Day celebrations. This was their first direct conversation since March.
Iran discussions continue
The timing of the talks comes as the Iran conflict remains tense, with a ceasefire in effect since April 8. Trump expressed dissatisfaction with Iran’s latest proposal to reopen the Strait of Hormuz while sidelining its nuclear program.
He warned Tehran to “get smart soon” amid stalled negotiations, which have driven up energy prices.
Putin suggested a swift political solution based on Russia’s relationships in the region. Russia has previously denounced U.S. military actions against Iran as “unprovoked aggression.” However, a formal defence pact between Russia and Tehran has not been established.

Ceasefire proposals offered
In relation to Ukraine, Putin indicated a willingness to respect a temporary ceasefire during the May 9 holiday.
The conversation also touched on front line assessments, with Putin reporting advancements by Russian forces. Trump has shown interest in negotiating a broader settlement to end the war.
The discussion also covered the April 25 shooting incident at the White House Correspondents’ Dinner. Putin condemned the attempted assassination of Trump, linked to the event.
The White House had not released any comments on the call’s content by Wednesday afternoon.
