Is Australia’s travel ban with India a human rights breach?

In the wake of Australia’s travel ban with India, the UN has voiced “serious concerns” about the recently imposed measures.

Rupert Colville from the UNHCR says “the UN Human Rights Committee has emphasised the narrow authority of a country to refuse its nationals’ return”.

The scathing statement went on to say “there are few, if any, circumstances in which deprivation of the right to enter one’s own country could be reasonable”.

There are now questions around whether Australia is in breach of Article 12 of the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights

There are now 9 thousand Australians wanting to come with the travel ban put in place until at least May 15.

This section protects people from being barred from entering their home county

Last week Australia banned individuals arriving from India and warned that rule-breakers would be subject to hefty fines and even jail time.
