Top officials of Moon Jae-in govt arrested over fabrication

Published

on

Top officials of the previous Moon Jae-in administration have been arrested over the weekend on document fabrication and other charges.

This comes as part of an expanding investigation into the death of a South Korean fisheries official by North Korea.

It is alleged that the Moon administration concluded without sufficient evidence that the fisheries official, Lee Dae-jun, was killed while attempting to defect to North Korea.

Critics say that this was part of efforts to curry favor with Pyongyang. With these recent arrests, it appears that those accusations may hold some weight.

Shock arrests

Former Defense Minister Suh Wook and former Coast Guard Commissioner General Kim Hong-hee were arrested over the past weekend on document fabrication and other charges. Other top officials could face charges in the expanding investigation.

“Special intelligence at the time showed Lee expressing his intention to defect to the North … How can including this intelligence in our judgment be a manipulation?” they said.

“We cannot imagine making groundless manipulations over a citizen’s life and honor,” Suh said.

The officials also denied allegations the then government did not do enough to save Lee, saying it was impossible to rescue Lee as he was in North Korean waters.

Helicopter carrying Iran’s President Raisi crashes

A helicopter carrying Iranian President Ebrahim Raisi and his foreign minister crashed on Sunday as it was crossing mountain terrain in heavy fog.

The official said the lives of Raisi and Foreign Minister Hossein Amirabdollahian were “at risk following the helicopter crash”, which happened on the way back from a visit to the border with Azerbaijan in Iran’s northwest.

“We are still hopeful but information coming from the crash site is very concerning,” the official told Reuters, speaking on condition of anonymity.

State TV quoted an official as saying at least one passenger and one crew member had been in contact with rescuers. It also said the helicopter had been found, though Iran’s Red Crescent denied this report.

Iranian Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, who holds ultimate power with a final say on foreign policy and Iran’s nuclear programme, sought to reassure Iranians, saying there would be no disruption to state affairs. #iran #trending

The government offers generous rebates and tax breaks to international productions, making it an attractive proposition for filmmakers looking to maximise their budgets.

Despite the recent intake of Hollywood productions down under such as ‘The Fall Guy’ and ‘Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga’, Aussie independents are still finding the space to carve their own creative path.
