Top official says China considered Taiwan attack

Relations between the island nation and China remain at an all-time high, a top Taiwanese official says China has previously debated whether or not it should attack the Pratas Islands.

Taiwan has been complaining for years of China deploying its airforce over the Pratas Islands, which are viewed by security experts as vulnerable due to their close proximity to mainland Taiwan.

After deliberations, Beijing reportedly decided that it would instead wait until after 20-24 when the current president’s term ends.

China’s internal defence ministry has not responded at this stage, but has previously blamed Taiwan and the US for the tensions throughout the Taiwan Strait.

Some Taiwan authorities fear that if China does capture the Pratas Islands it could lead to a drastic escalation of tensions that could result in war.
