Tokyo Olympics thrown into doubt

Japanese authorities are currently deciding whether or not they will extend Tokyo’s state of emergency, as COVID-19 infection rates continue to surge throughout the nation.

The move would almost certainly cast doubt over the upcoming Summer Olympics, which are due to kick off on July 23.

The country’s Prime Minister, Yoshihide Suga says his government wants to make a decision this week, with sources warning an extension is likely.

The President of the International Olympic Committee is scheduled to visit Japan in the coming weeks.

There are fears that a further state of emergency may renew calls from the public to cancel the games entirely.
