TikTok could be banned in the United States as senators unveil new tech legislation

A dozen U.S. senators have introduced a new bill that would allow the banning of foreign tech platforms such as TikTok.

The proposed legislation, called Restricting the Emergence of Security Threats Act, does not target TikTok specifically but aims to give the U.S. government a whole host of new powers.

This could include a ban against foreign-linked producers of electronics or software that are deemed to be a national security risk.

The proposal takes a wide-ranging approach to fears companies with ties to China could be pressured by the country’s government into handing over Americans’ sensitive personal information or communications records.

In the case of TikTok, lawmakers say Beijing’s national security laws could force the company to provide access to U.S. user data.

Republican John Thune says the bill is aimed at protecting his nation’s citizens.
