Tesla autopilot update to detect driver’s attention

The update means Tesla cars will now “detect and alert driver inattentiveness while Autopilot is engaged

The update will address issues facing Tesla’s “self-driving” autopilot feature, which critics have highlighted as ‘easy to fool.’

Although the existing system requires drivers to pay attention at all times, the new feature will detect how much attention the driver is actually paying.

Experts report the camera above the car’s rear-view mirror will start performing a similar function.

Tesla’s safety concerns

Tesla’s cars have relied on sensors in the wheel, to make sure the driver’s hands remain on it.

For example, that means the vehicle can slow down or switch off automated driving features if the driver starts looking at their phone.

Word of the update comes days after a fatal crash in Texas.
