Phillips and Pereira were missing for more than a week after travelling through the Amazon rainforest
A suspect has now confessed to shooting British journalist Dom Phillips and indigenous expert Bruno Pereira.
The man reportedly took investigators to the site where human remains were dug up with police yet to confirm the identities of the bodies.
Two suspects have been arrested at this stage, who are allegedly brothers.
Police expect to carry out further arrests, and say the motive for the killings still remains unclear.
Phillips and Pereira, 41, went missing in a remote part of the Amazon rainforest on June 5.
Mr Phillips’ wife, says: “Although we are still awaiting definitive confirmations, this tragic outcome puts an end to the anguish of not knowing Dom and Bruno’s whereabouts. Now we can bring them home and say goodbye with love.”
Phillips had lived in Brazil for over a decade and contributed to The Guardian. He was in the Javari Valley working on an environmental protection book, whilst Pereira was serving as a local guide on the journey.
