South Africa’s most recent floods show the devastation of climate change

Survivors of South Africa’s severe floods are beginning to speak out, with many using the extreme weather event to sound the alarm on the climate crisis

Torrential rain washed away houses, roads and other major infrastructure killing 450 people and leaving thousands without a roof over their head.

The storm saw almost a year’s worth of rainfall drop in the space of just 48 hours and experts are blaming climate change.

This latest storm follows three tropical cyclones and two tropical storms hitting south-east Africa in 2022 alone.

South Africa’s weather service says although it’s impossible to link a single storm to the climate crisis, globally, severe and extreme weather events are becoming far more frequent.

It warns heavy rain like this can be expected to recur in the future and with increasing frequency.
