Mark Zuckerberg has announced that NFTs are coming to Instagram

At the South by Southwest conference in Austin, Texas, Zuckerberg says the social media company will welcome NFTs (non-fungible tokens) to its platform in the coming months.

He says this could give Instagram users the opportunity to open up their own platforms.

“Hopefully over time [users will] be able to mint things within that environment,”

Zuckerberg says,

Although, there are technical aspects that need to be improved before the process would be complete.

Instagram isn’t the first social media platform to integrate NFTs, since January users on Twitter’s subscription service Twitter Blue can use verified NFTs as profile pictures.

NFTs are units of data that can be stored on the blockchain, the data could be digital art, songs, films or anything that can be traded on digital markets.
