A small private jet crashed in Northeast Philadelphia shortly after takeoff, igniting a fire. Pennsylvania Governor Josh Shapiro confirmed the incident and stated that resources from the Commonwealth were deployed to assist with the response.

The crash happened less than five kilometres from Northeast Philadelphia Airport, which serves primarily business jets and charter flights.

Witnesses described a sudden explosion, with residential homes nearby engulfed in flames. One local resident, Michael Schiavone, reported that the loud blast shook his house, comparing it to a mini earthquake. He added that his home security footage showed what looked like a missile falling.

Photos from the scene revealed thick black smoke and flames. Debris was scattered across a busy intersection, captured by cellphone footage of the chaotic aftermath.

Flight tracking data indicates that the Learjet 55 had taken off at 6:06 p.m., reaching an altitude of 500 metres before disappearing from radar. The aircraft was heading to Springfield, Missouri, operating as a medical transport service registered to Med Jets.

The Federal Aviation Administration confirmed that two individuals were on board the plane. The National Transportation Safety Board will conduct the investigation and is presently collecting information.

Philadelphia’s emergency management office has closed surrounding roads while first responders work at the crash site to secure the area.
