Singapore will decriminalise sex between men

Singapore will officially decriminalise sex between men, repealing a long-standing law banning the act.

Speaking at his national day rally speech, Prime Minister Lee Hsien says the move represents a change in societal values, as residents become more accepting of gay people.

Singapore is the latest in a string of Asian nations which has pushed to end discrimination against members of the LGBTQ community.

In 2018, India’s high court scrapped a gay sex ban and Thailand is getting closer to legalising same-sex marriage.

Although it’s not actively enforced, under Singapore’s current laws, offenders can be jailed for up to two years for engaging in gay sex.

But it’s not all good news for Queer advocates, with the Prime minister also outlining his plans to further strengthen the definition of marriage to prevent same-sex unions.
