Russia’s football federation drops an appeal against FIFA

Russia was recently set to face Poland in a world cup qualifier but the match was called off because of the nation’s intervention in Ukraine

FIFA banned Russia from World Cup qualifying after the country’s invasion of Ukraine.

The Football Union of Russia initially protested the ban but have withdrawn their appeal since.

FIFA’s President says his the organisation acted swiftly.

“FIFA is acting everywhere in the world and we have to treat the same situations in the same way.”

The nation is also currently banned from competing in European club tournaments.

Meanwhile, several nations say they will not play against Russia, including Poland, Sweden and the Czech Republic.

The Champions League final, which was scheduled for St Petersburg in May, has also moved to Paris.

Other sporting competitions have also banned Russia, including international gymnastics, rugby, rowing, and skating events. But the nation says it plans to fight these bans.

President Putn says his intervention in Ukraine is a “special military operation”.

Meanwhile, Chelsea Football Club will sell tickets again following sanctions against its Russian owner, Roman Abramovich.
