Russia blocks crucial UN resolution on climate

Russia has vetoed a UN resolution casting climate change as a threat to international peace and security

The first-of-its-kind vote, sinks a years-long effort to make climate change a more central part of the UN’s decision-making.

The resolution was pushed forward by Ireland and Niger, who called for “incorporating information on the security implications of climate change”.

It hoped the Security Council would “pay due regard to any root causes of conflict or risk multipliers.”

The measure also asked the UN secretary-general to make climate-related security risks “a central component” of conflict prevention strategies.

Russia believes that the issue should remain with certain UN groups, like the Framework Convention on Climate Change.

India also voted NO on the vote, while China abstained from voting.
