Officers who defended the US Capitol Building during the January 6 riots have delivered testimonies as the House of Representatives begins its investigation into the day’s events

The individuals spoke about scenes of chaos, violence and despair at the first hearing in front of the select committee.

Just two Republican lawmakers were on the panel after Trump-supporting party leaders decided to boycott the investigation altogether.

In total, four police officers offered their version of events, saying they were fearing for their lives and overwhelmed by the sheer size of the pro-Trump group.

Many of the officers present at the attack are reportedly suffering from physical and emotional distress six months later.

The individuals at the hearing say they were punched, kicked, pepper-sprayed and beaten with flagpoles by the rioters.

Meanwhile, Officer Harry Dunn, who is black, spoke of protestors screaming racial slurs at him, but says democracy still exists in America.

“Well, I voted for Joe Biden,” Dunn told the crowd in front of him. “Does my vote not count? Am I nobody?”

He also asked Congress to review the mental health services available to Capitol Police.

“There is absolutely nothing wrong with seeking professional counseling,” Dunn said. “What we all went through that day was traumatic, and if you are hurting, please take advantage of the counseling services that are available to us.”

“Frankly, I guess it is America,” Dunn said.

“It shouldn’t be. But I guess that’s the way things are. I don’t condone it. I don’t like it. … We [the testifying officers] represent the good side of America, human decency. We appeal to the good in people.”

Dunn added that he, along with the other three officers testifying before the committee, would “do Jan. 6 all over again” to protect democracy.

Following the hearing, Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell was asked to give his thoughts.
