With the midterm elections fast approaching, Mitch McConnell believes Republicans have a 50-50 chance of taking back control of the Senate
U.S. Republican leader Mitch McConnell says his party has a 50-50 chance of taking control of the Senate as midterm elections fast approach.
Speaking at an event in Georgetown, Kentucky, McConnell conceded that the battle is going to come down to the wire.”Flipping the Senate, what are the chances? It’s a 50-50 proposition. We’ve got a 50-50 Senate right now. We’ve got a 50-50 nation,” McConnell said.
Whatever the outcome, McConnell believes the chamber will remain closely divided, making the prospect of passing legislation difficult for either side.
Meanwhile, if the conservative party is successful in winning both the Senate and the House, McConnell has vowed to find ways to work alongside Democratic President, Joe Biden.
If this happens and both the House and the Senate fall in favour of the Republicans, McConnell believes Biden won’t have any choice other than being “a moderate” leader.
“If both the House and the Senate flip, I think the President will be a moderate. He won’t have any choice. And so, we’ll try to find ways to make some progress for the country during the last two years of his term… but not big dramatic change.”
This all follows some off the cuff comments McConnell made just last week, suggesting flipping the Senate requires significant candidate quality.
As election day approaches, McConnell also urged his audience not to be concerned about election fraud.
“Election fraud, there is some. It happens occasionally. But our democracy is solid. And of the things we need to worry about, I wouldn’t be worried about that one,” McConnell said.
