The election is being viewed as a referendum and analysis of Joe Biden’s presidency and his administration’s popularity amongst voters.

The defeat will almost certainly put the Democrats on edge, with Biden claiming victory in Virginia by 10 points a year ago.

Many are attributing the loss to America’s rising inflation, slow economic recovery, Afghanistan withdrawal and a slow-moving legislative agenda.

Meanwhile, Youngkin has promised to get to work straight away and transform the state, saying “we work in real people time, not government time”.

Meanwhile, Republican House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy says this should be a wake-up call to all Washington Democrats
