In the wake of the protests in France over the government’s planned pension reforms – new polls suggest Emmanuel Macron would be out of a job is an election was held now.

They indicate far-right leader Marine Le Pen would beat Macron in a presidential run-off if the vote was held again.

The survey, conducted by the Elabe group, shows Le Pen would score 55 percent and Macron just 45 percent.

Last April, Macron defeated Le Pen by a margin of 58.5 percent to 41.5 percent to become the first French president to win a second term in two decades.

But some analysts have stressed the polling is hypothetical and the results should not be over-interpreted.

The next presidential election is four years away and Macron will be ineligible to run again.
