A prominent Polish activist has been sentenced to eight months of community service for illegally helping another woman have an abortion.

Justyna Wydrzynska is thought to be the first person to be tried for aiding a pregnant woman under the country’s strict laws.

Abortion has almost been completely banned in Poland and providing help can now fetch up to three years in prison.

The woman Wydrzynska sent the pills to did not end up going through with the termination.

She told the court she had sent a package of abortion pills to the pregnant woman when she found out she was in an abusive relationship.

UN officials, gynaecologists and human rights groups were all appealing for the case to be dropped.

Some members of the European Parliament say no individual should ever be locked away for helping a woman access abortion care.
