Oscars: CODA wins best picture

Published

The 94th Academy Awards is underway at the Dolby Theatre in Hollywood

Stars are gracing the red-carpet for pre-oscars parties as Regina Hall, Amy Schumer and Wanda Sykes host the 2022 Oscars, a first for each of them and the first time in Oscars history that three women have hosted.

After months of film festivals and campaign events and a few Omicron delays, the Oscars are set to honour the best films of the year.

Let’s dive into a refresher of this years nominee’s ahead of tonight’s big show.

Will CODA take home Best Picture? Is this the year Will Smith wins an Oscar?

Best picture

CODA won Best Picture, making Apple TV + the first streaming service to win an Oscar.

CODA and The Power of the Dog had been neck-and-neck in this category.

Netflix’s “The Power of the Dog” is actually the most-nominated film going into the night, with 12 nominations.

Following closely behind is “Dune” with 10 nominations. It’s a pulpy science-fiction narrative and a hot choice for best picture – could this take gold?

Critics are saying The Power of the Dog is actually one of the weakest picks for best picture with Belfast” and Steven Spielberg’s “West Side Story” top contenders with 7 nominations.

Stars in the best actor in a leading role category include Javier Bardem, Benedict Cumberbatch, Andrew Garfield, Will Smith and Denzel Washington.

The best actress in a leading role category consists of Jessica Chastain, Olivia Colman, Penélope Cruz, Nicole Kidman and Kristen Stewart.

But before top awards are announced we can expect performances from Beyoncé, Billie Eilish and the cast from Disney’s encanto.

‘Movie Lovers Unite’

The theme of this year’s Oscars is “Movie Lovers Unite and millions will tune in to the ceremony.

Now this years show won’t be as long as others.

Last month, pressured by its broadcast partner ABC to tighten and reinvigorate the often bloated telecast, the academy announced that some awards like makeup and hairstyling and sound, will be given out off-air before the show begins.

Viewer numbers were considered embarrassing last year…down a whopping 56 percent from the previous ceremony.. so there’s a lot at stake this year

The Oscars will stream internationally in over 200 territories

Trump claims Iran’s military largely neutralized; tensions rise with attacks threatening air travel and oil shipping.

President Trump says Iran’s military capability has been largely neutralised, including its navy and air force, as the conflict in the Middle East intensifies. Iranian attacks have threatened commercial air travel and oil shipping through the Strait of Hormuz, raising fears of wider economic fallout.

The U.S. Embassy in Riyadh has faced two attacks, while Gulf states worked to intercept further Iranian strikes. Officials report six U.S. troops killed and more than 700 deaths inside Iran as the exchange of fire escalates.

With global markets watching closely, the region remains on edge as military and diplomatic tensions show no signs of easing.
