North Korea is celebrating a decade of leader Kim Jong Un being in power

April 10 marks a decade since Kim Jong Un took power as the leader of the Worker’s Party of Korea.

To celebrate the North Korean supreme leader, new portraits and exhibitions were unveiled across the main city of Pyongyang.

The country praised his leadership in developing nuclear weapons and commended his political achievements.

Kim rose to power after his father died in late 2011, taking on the role of commander of the military.

The Kim family has ruled the one-party state for its entire history.

One North Korean senior official gave a speech at the national meeting calling him a “gifted thinker and theoretician, outstanding statesman and peerlessly great commander”.

The week of celebrations will also include the 110 year anniversary of the birth of North Korea’s founder and Kim Jong Un’s grandfather.
