New Zealand’s ‘atrocious’ loss to Costa Rica in World Cup play-off

New Zealand’s All Whites have been left heartbroken and furious following a 1-nil loss to Costa Rica in their World Cup play-off

Coach Danny Hay said the officiating was at times “atrocious” and he said the referee wasn’t up to the level required.

It’s the third qualifying campaign in a row New Zealand have fallen at the final hurdle after losing play-offs to Mexico and Peru in the past two World Cup cycles.

Meanwhile England has been booed off the pitch after suffering its worst home defeat in nearly 100 years and going four games in a row without a victory.

Hungary sent four goals past the home side in the UEFA Nations League.

Remarkably, Hungary are the first team to score four goals in an away match against England since they themselves won 6-3 at Wembley in 1953.

“It was a night to forget but we‘ve got to take it on the chin. We’ve got to move forward,” says England captain Harry Kane.
