One person has died following the collapse of a multi-storey car park in lower Manhattan.

The second floor of the four-storey structure in New York’s Financial District collapsed first.

Six workers were in the building at the time – four have been transported to hospital in a stable condition, one refused medical treatment, and another died at the scene.

Authorities say the rescue operation was extremely dangerous and the structure remains unstable.

Video posted online shows cars and debris stacked on shattered concrete.

The cause of the collapse is not yet known, as officials assess neighbouring buildings for any damage.
