Indian opposition parties have celebrated the election victory of a regional leader.

The incoming leader won against Prime Minister Modi’s ruling party, in early signs Modi’s days may be numbered.

The defeat of the Prime Minister’s party comes as India suffers the world’s worst COVID-19 outbreak, recording over 300,000 new infections every day.

In the lead-up to the election, Modi visited West Bengal many times in the hope that he could further swing popularity for his party.

Opposition leaders and political commentators believe the victory is significant as, “what Bengal does today, India does tomorrow… and this is just the beginning.”
