A pigeon was detained after it was discovered carrying a backpack which contained crystal meth

Prison officers discovered a bird in a Canadian jail carrying drugs.

“A pigeon was located at Pacific Institution, inside the walls and it appeared to have a small package, sort of like a backpack attached to it,” said John Randle, who is the president of the Pacific Region for Union of Canadian Correctional.

Officers noticed the high-flying bird with its cargo swooping over the Vancouver institution, before capturing it with a trap.

Officer have recently noted smugglers had to go ‘old school’ with their methods, as law enforcement has increased their awareness of drones.

Mr Randall told Global News the mini backpack contained around 30 grams of crystal meth.

“It’s definitely scary with the fact that it was crystal meth that was found on the bird because that causes a whole lot of problems,” he explained.
