Melbourne now the biggest city in Australia as the city’s limits are expanded

Move over Sydney – Melbourne is now the biggest city in Australia.

Melbourne has overtaken Sydney as Australia’s most populous city for the first time since the 19th Century gold rush.

Sydney holding the title for more than 100 years.

Populations on Melbourne’s fringe have seen the city’s limits expanded to include the area of Melton.

The latest government figures put Melbourne’s population at 4,875,400 – which is18,700 more than Sydney.

The Australian Bureau of Statistics defines a city’s “significant urban area”, by including all connecting suburbs with more than 10,000 people.

Until the 2021 census, the Sydney significant area had a higher population than Melbourne.

But with the amalgamation of Melton into Melbourne in the latest classification, Melbourne has more people than Sydney. #trending #featured
