Man accused of stabbing author Salman Rushdie pleads not guilty

The man accused of stabbing award-winning author Salman Rushdie has pleaded not guilty to attempted murder and assault

The 24-year-old appeared in a courtroom in New York state, after he was indicated by a grand jury.

The suspect is being held without bail and has been ordered to surrender all firearms.

If convicted of attempted murder, he could face up to 25 years in prison, and the assault charge carries a maximum sentence of seven years.

Rushdie has long been a target by some Muslims for his 1988 satirical novel, ‘The Satanic Verses’ which has been labeled sacrilegious.

The 75-year-old was preparing to give a lecture when an assailant jumped on stage and stabbed him multiple times.
