Japan’s public broadcaster is reporting that the he will not run for re-election

He has told his party’s executive committee he won’t run in the party’s upcoming leadership race, set to take place at the end of the month

He will also step down as Prime Minister this month.

Support for Suga has fallen to new lows.

He has been criticised for his handling of the pandemic – and for pressing ahead with the olympics.

The Tokyo Olympics did little to shore up his approval.
