Japan lawmakers have voted Fumio Kishida as the nation’s new Prime Minister

The incoming Prime Minister plans to call a general election for the lower house of parliament on October 31, according to public broadcaster NHK.

Current terms of members of the lower house of Japan’s Parliament expire on October 21 and an election must be held by November 28.

The newly selected leader of Japan’s ruling party will be formally confirmed as the nation’s new PM in a parliamentary vote, if the party has a majority in the Lower House.

“I want to face this time ahead with strong feelings and strong determination,”

Mr Kishida said

New cabinet ministers under PM Kishida are expected to be announced. Of the 20 posts in his cabinet, 13 will be filled by people with no prior cabinet experience.
