Japan’s state of emergency is set to be extended through to the 30th of September as the nation battles a Covid-19 surge with the highly infectious Delta variant
The extension comes three days before the state of emergency was set to expire, and will apply to 19 prefectures including Tokyo and Osaka.
Six prefectures such as Miyagi and Okayama will be under quasi-emergency measures where some restrictions may be eased.
Come November, the government will consider relaxing COVID-19 curbs on travel, large-scale events and serving alcohol.
