Italian journalist who prompted fall of Berlin Wall dies

A prominent Italian journalist who is well known for asking the decisive question which ultimately brought down the Berlin Wall has died aged 92

Riccardo Ehrman asked the lead German spokesperson to explain why private travel wouldn’t be allowed outside East Germany.

The spokesperson was pressed on when that would happen, to which he eventually responded, “right now, immediately”.

Within hours of this key moment, the Berlin Wall was finally brought crumbling down.

Ehrman had been working for the Italian news agency ANSA when East Germans began speaking up and taking on their communist government.

ANSA announced his passing on social media, saying “farewell to Riccardo Ehrman, the man who brought down the Berlin Wall.”
