Israel’s military reported the killing of Al Jazeera journalist Anas Al Sharif, whom they claimed led a Hamas cell, during a strike in Gaza City.
According to Reuters, the Qatari broadcaster stated that three other journalists were also killed, with local sources reporting a total of seven fatalities.
The Israeli military asserted that Al Sharif was integral to facilitating rocket attacks against Israeli civilians and troops.
Palestinian journalist organizations condemned the incident, while press freedom advocates and a UN expert had previously raised alarms about Al Sharif’s safety due to his journalistic work.

Reports indicated that U.N. Special Rapporteur Irene Khan labelled the Israeli claims against him as unverified.
