Apple’s $1,999 iPhone Duo sells out fast, delivery pushed to January 2027 amid high demand and limited supply

In Short:
– The iPhone Duo sold out rapidly, with delivery dates pushed to January 2027 for all configurations.
– High demand has driven resale prices up to $5,200, indicating supply issues amid consumer interest.
Apple’s first foldable phone, the iPhone Duo, sold out quickly after preorders began on October 16, 2023.
All configurations of the $1,999 device displayed delivery dates in late January 2027 within minutes of the preorder launch.

Preorder quantities have been swiftly exhausted, with estimates indicating that most buyers will not receive their phones on launch day. At 5:30 a.m. Pacific time, Apple’s U.S. store showed a January 25 delivery for all eight versions.

High demand continues to fuel prices, with some eBay listings reaching up to $5,200. Apple’s retail and online stock diminished almost instantaneously, indicating a tight supply.

The same trend occurred in China, where launch-day store pickups sold out within seconds after preorders commenced at 8 p.m. local time.

Investor confidence surged as Apple’s market value approached $5.03 trillion, nearing that of Nvidia. Analysts predict iPhone Duo sales may surpass earlier estimates of 14 million units and $28 billion.

However, some industry observers warn that the rapid sellout highlights supply issues rather than sheer consumer demand. Reports suggest early production levels were as low as a few hundred units per day.

Ownership is now under CEO John Ternus, leading to expectations for improved supply management going forward. Reservations for store pickup have been paused until October 24, with uncertainty over walk-in availability on launch day.

Sales potential

The iPhone Duo features a 5.4-inch outer screen and a 7.6-inch inner display, making it Apple’s largest iPhone screen.

It includes two 48-megapixel cameras and supports the Apple Pencil. Variants come in storage options ranging from 256GB to 2TB.

Despite the initial excitement, analysts caution that balancing supply and demand for such a high-end product remains a challenge for Apple.

The device will officially release on October 23, 2023, in over 70 countries.

Customers are encouraged to consider reserving their preorders early to avoid long wait times.
