Hungary’s authoritarian leader and Russian ally declares victory

Hungary’s authoritarian leader and Russian ally, Viktor Orbán has declared victory following the nation’s federal election.

This is Orbán fourth consecutive term, and his party has a significant lead with over 70 percent of the votes now counted.

The election has been dominated by Putin’s invasion of Ukraine.

Orbán is a long-time Russian ally.

He is one of the last politicians in Europe who continues to support buying Russian gas and oil.

In his victory speech, he labelled Ukraine’s President Zelensky as one of the “opponents” he had to overcome.

Hungary is reliant on Russian energy, and the country is complicating the EU’s efforts to present a united front against Putin.
