Green hydrogen could play a critical role in reducing aviation’s carbon emissions, with new research from Adelaide University outlining the steps needed to make hydrogen-powered commercial flights a reality.

While aviation remains one of the most difficult industries to decarbonise due to the high energy demands of long-haul travel, researchers say green hydrogen offers one of the most promising pathways to cleaner flight.

The study examines the technological, infrastructure and safety challenges that must be addressed before hydrogen-powered aircraft can become commercially viable.

Lead author and Adelaide University PhD candidate Zahra Jaffary says significant investment will be needed in airport infrastructure, hydrogen production and fuel distribution, alongside advances in aircraft design.

Governments will also play an important role by supporting research, developing regulations and encouraging industry investment.

The findings suggest Australia is well placed to become a global leader in hydrogen aviation thanks to its renewable energy resources and growing hydrogen industry.

However, researchers say collaboration between governments, airports, airlines and manufacturers will be essential before hydrogen-powered flights become a common sight in the skies.
