As organisations scale AI adoption, machine identities such as tokens, secrets and certificates have surged to more than 100 for every human identity, creating a vast and often poorly understood attack surface that many companies still struggle to secure.

At the same time, identity compromise has become the leading entry point for cyber criminals, who increasingly rely on stolen credentials rather than direct system breaches.

This shift is being amplified by more advanced phishing tactics and deepfake technology, with research showing around 90% of organisations have experienced identity breaches, and over 80% have faced multiple incidents.

Despite these risks, many businesses continue to prioritise speed in AI deployment over security fundamentals.

Experts are calling for a modern identity strategy built on visibility, unified decision-making and stronger controls across both human and machine identities.

Fikentscher emphasises that closing these gaps is essential as attackers now operate at machine speed, making identity security a frontline concern for the AI-driven economy.
