The conservative government led by Angela Merkel will be replaced by the Social Democrats

The 16-year reign of Chancellor Angela Merkel in Germany will officially come to an end… with a three-party coalition government set to take over.

Olaf Scholz will lead the government… with his Social Democrat Party going into power with both the Greens and business-minded Free Democrats.

Climate is a major part of the coalition’s plans for the nation… with the parties aiming to phase out coal use by 2030, which is eight years ahead of schedule.

Additionally, the new government will use 2 percent of German territory to develop further wind farms and also focus in on hydrogen-based electricity.

The coalition wants to see 80 percent of Germany’s electricity to be renewable and 15 million electric vehicles on the roads.

Germany is the biggest economy within the European Union… meaning decisions made by the incoming government will have widespread impacts.

In a press conference, Scholz said “the sovereignty of Europe is a cornerstone of Germany’s foreign policy”.

Scholz also highlighted Germany’s friendship with France and partnership with the U.S.
