Joe Hachem never set out to become one of the world’s most recognisable poker players.

The Lebanese Australian was working as a chiropractor when a hand condition forced him to reconsider his career.

What initially looked like a major setback ultimately sent Hachem in a completely different direction, into professional poker.

It was a particularly opportune time to enter the game.

Poker was undergoing a transformation, with the emergence of online poker and innovations such as hole card cameras helping bring the game to a much wider audience.

Then, in 2005, Hachem walked into the World Series of Poker Main Event as an unknown player and produced one of the biggest upsets in the tournament’s history.

At 39, married and already successful in his previous career, Hachem approached the tournament with a level-headed mindset.

He wasn’t chasing fame or looking to define himself through a single result.

That perspective became particularly important as he reached the final table and had to reset after realising he had already secured a life-changing result.

Hachem ultimately defeated a field of almost 6,000 players to become Australia’s first world poker champion, taking home US$7.5 million.

But winning the biggest tournament in poker was only the beginning.

Today, Hachem is putting his profile and passion for the game towards philanthropy through Birdies and Bluffs, an event combining poker and golf to raise funds for the Save Our Sons Foundation.

The concept goes beyond simply raising money.

Participants are randomly paired, creating opportunities for people from different backgrounds to meet, build relationships and potentially do business together.

Previous events have already produced meaningful connections, including a major business contract between participants.

The next Birdies and Bluffs event is scheduled for October 12 in Sydney, with plans to eventually take the concept to international markets including San Francisco and Los Angeles.

For Hachem, the journey from chiropractor to poker champion has become about more than winning a title.
