A South Australian footballer has died following an on-field collision in Australia’s Adelaide Hills at the weekend.

Antonio Loiacono was flown to the Royal Adelaide Hospital after suffering critical injuries during a match.

He was representing Birdwood Football Club’s A-Grade side during the opening game of the Hills Football League season.

Antonio’s brother confirmed the news, saying the young man died on Sunday afternoon in hospital.

He is being remembered as a “respectful, caring, loving and beautiful soul”, who “was always loyal.”

After being knocked out in the final quarter, he was initially treated by medical staff at the oval, 35km north-east of Adelaide, before he was flown to the city’s Royal Hospital.
