A massive fire has engulfed a construction site in Hong Kong’s popular shopping district.

The blaze erupted at around 11pm on Thursday night local time at The Mariners’ Club redevelopment project.

The redevelopment by the Empire Group was to build a 42-storey landmark to house the historic club and a new hotel.

Multiple floors of the structure have been affected and burning debris is floating through the nearby streets.

The site is surrounded by a shopping centre, some residential buildings and commercial offices.

There are also several hotels in the area.

Police say four adjacent buildings lit up in flames, but those blazes have since been extinguished.

No casualties have been reported at this stage.
