FIFA to increase participating World Cup nations to 48

The increase will see an extra 40 matches be played across the tournament

FIFA has announced it will be increasing the number of the participating nations at the 2026 World Cup.

The organisation has approved going from a 32-team tournament to 48 for the event in the U.S., Canada and Mexico.

There will be an extra 40 matches that will be be played, taking the total games to 104.

Nations will also play one extra match compared to what they did in Qatar, going up to a possible eight matches.

There will be 12 groups, with four teams in each.

The top two nations from each group will automatically qualify for the next stage, while the best eight, third-placed teams will also progress to the knockout stage.
