A man has been spotted hanging from a spire high above the ground for hours to demanding action on climate change.

He’s a member of climate action protest group Extinction Rebellion.

He scaled the top of the Melbourne Arts Centre and unfurled a sign before lighting a flare.

Meanwhile, on the ground, protesters have erected a makeshift tent city and are protesting the rising number of people being displaced by climate catastrophes.

They are holding signs and chanting “power to the people”.

As we go to air, police, paramedics and fire and rescue crews remain on the scene.

This event is the first major disruptive action in months after a series of dramatic stunts in Sydney last year.

Extinction Rebellion has planned three days of protest action next month in Melbourne from May 25-27.
