European countries struggle with a prolonged heatwave as it sparks multiple wildfires in Spain, France and Portugal

Firefighters in Portugal battled nearly 20 blazes while several others burned across swathes of western Spain.

Water-bombing aircraft tackled fires across multiple fronts as tourists and villages were faced with evacuation and temperates nudged the high 40s Celsius.

Six water-bomber aircraft and around 800 firefighters also tackled several blazes in south west France.

In Leiria in Portugal, 750 firefighters tackled two main fire fronts.

And 23 aircraft criss-crossed the skies tackling fires nationwide

France has also reduced the scale of planned nationwide celebrations on July 14th, Bastille Day, France’s national holiday.

Fireworks displays in many areas of the country have been cancelled due to the fire risk.

The Met Office in the UK also says there is a chance that this heatwave will see the UK reach its highest ever recorded temperature.
